Spring & Summer Greenhouse/Garden Internship
Mary Free Bed YMCA Healthy Living Center Greenhouse and Learning Farm

The Greenhouse and Learning Farm is the place where growth and nourishment are cultivated. The farm and greenhouse are intended to teach children and families how to grow, maintain, and prepare fresh vegetables and herbs.

Greenhouse/Garden Interns will have the opportunity learn organic gardening techniques and skills while working in a combined production and education greenhouse and garden.

Internship Details:

  • Expected to commit to the end date of August 31st

  • 15 to 20 Hour Work Week commitment

    Responsibilities include:

  • Participate in field work: planting (direct seeding and transplanting), watering, weeding, harvesting, bed prep, soil amending, etc.

  • Assist with summer garden and greenhouse educational programs for both children and adults

  • Germinate seeds and propagate plants in greenhouse and garden

  • Learn about irrigation systems

  • Harvest and preserve produce

  • Learn about and experience organic pest control

  • Learn & assist in maintaining compost system

  • Seed Saving

  • Learn and assist in our Microgreens production

  • Learn and assist in our Tower Garden production (hydroponics)

  • Help facilitate community volunteer groups

  • Learn greenhouse management skills

    Skills Desired:

    Seeking individuals interested in and eager to learn the process of taking food from seed to table. No previous gardening experience is necessary. Applicants should possess a strong work ethic, positive attitude, communication skills, and problem-solving abilities. Individuals should be reliable, responsible and capable of self-directed work. Candidate must also be a team player, be flexible, and be willing to be involved beyond garden work to occasionally help with programs and other special events.

    Education Opportunities:

  • Build experience in organic gardening

  • Take part in a local food system and participate in place-based learning

  • Create opportunities to connect children, adults, and families with gardens, food, and

    community

    Interns are eligible for a free YMCA Membership during their internship period
